What is Vinyl-On-Gypsum?

Vinyl gypsum (VOG) panels are panels with laminate like coating over top of the gypsum. What is gypsum? Gypsum is a soft and lightweight white or gray chalk-like material (similar to drywall). These vinyl-coated panels have a shiny finish, and there is often a printed design layer applied over the gypsum and under the shiny vinyl topcoat.

Typically 5/16 thick, these panels do not have tapered edges, so they are usually finished with a strip to cover the seams where panels meet.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of VOG panels?

When shopping and deciding if VOG panels are a good option for you, it's important to have all of the pros and cons.

Advantages of VOG Panels

Whether for the ceiling or walls, advantages include that they are lightweight, easy to install, and require low maintenance.
The vinyl coating on the VOG wall type is easier to clean than painted and textured walls. Crayons, markers, dirty fingerprints, and other common wall messes can be wiped off with regular household cleaning products rather than needing to be repainted.
The method of installation and vinyl material make this material type less susceptible to cracks caused by building settling, requiring even less maintenance.

    Disadvantages of VOG Panels

While those reasons may entice someone to use VOG panels in their next renovation in their home or business, there are also some disadvantages that should be considered.

The first disadvantage to mention is that with the strips between each panel, there isn't a smooth, continuous look. This look disrupts the continuity of the walls or ceiling, especially when the pattern on the panel doesn't blend well. With the different edge profiles available through Kanopi, this wouldn't be a problem when going with the alternatives.
Another disadvantage of VOG panels is they are difficult to change the look. The color or pattern chosen when first installing, is the look that will need to continue, unless there is a complete replacement or renovation. VOG panels, due to their laminate coating, cannot easily be painted. If you like to change looks and styles, ceiling tiles are easily swapped and changed as often as you want.
The last disadvantage of vinyl gypsum panels is their low durability, With their inability to withstand any impact, the likelihood of a nick or bump is high whenever anything comes in contact with them. And when that happens, the panel would need to be replaced. Impact resistant ceiling tiles, on the other hand, can withstand contact, making them the ideal solution when this is a concern.
